“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” The first painting I seriously painted in watercolor (a grand massed ship passing near rugged rocks, illuminated by a light house) carried this verse as the theme. Since then, light continues to be an important part in my work, perhaps because the Lord is my light. With Him, I delight in the simple things that often are not simple at all. This is the path I’m on when I work with watercolors.
Painting, in many ways, has given me vitality. Through it, and because of it, I must look longer and feel deeper the things around me; to give myself time to just be genuine. When I came to Switzerland, from USA, in the year 2000, I felt a great loss. It wasn’t easy to pull up roots at the age of 40. Everything familiar had changed. I even had difficulty using a pay phone! Then I started painting again and a sense of “home” came back. There, in the process and in the picture itself was something no one could take away. I got my tickle for life back, especially when I paint fruit or vegetables. I see certain personalities in each one. They often make me laugh. Perhaps, by looking at my work and incorporating the individual titles, you will discover a little bit of joy and humor as well.
